Three emerging companies with prospects of new technology that could better the world were winners at the fifth annual TECH Fort Worth IMPACT awards announced May 15.
The awards – designed to increase awareness about entrepreneurial activity in North Texas – were presented at a luncheon on the campus of Texas Christian University. The awards are granted to early-stage businesses commercializing innovative products or services that will have a significant impact on the environment, health care and on the community.
The IMPACT Awards also raises funds to support business incubation programs for technology-based entrepreneurs.

You can use your iPhone to play games, find restaurants, even friends. Now, some people in North Texas are using their iPhones to prevent blindness.

There’s a tiny part of your retina – that’s the tissue in the back of the eye – called the macula. It’s what makes it possible for you see details and do things like thread a needle, read small print and street signs. Diseases, like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, damage the macula and can cause blindness.

For over a decade, Dr. Yi-Zhong Wang has been trying to come up with a way to help people struggling with these diseases. He’s a research scientist at the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas.

Wang explains that both ARMD and diabetic retinopathy can result in leakage of blood and swelling in the eye.

Nine startup companies with innovative technologies have been named finalists for the 2013 TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards.

In the community category, finalists are: Create Labs, a social media provider; Inception Lighting, which developed an outdoor-rated LED lighting system, and Student Success Academy, a consulting agency that pairs high school students with college students for guidance.

Finalists in the energy and environment category are: AutoEvolve, an auto recycler; iLumi, which developed LED lights controlled wirelessly from a mobile app; and Pulsar Energy, which developed proprietary technology to harness the power of the sun and generate low-cost electricity and heat

And in the health category, finalists are: Applied Regenerative Technologies, which focuses on restoring nerve function after trauma, tumor resection or neurological disease; eMist, which developed a method for applying disinfectants and anti-bacterial chemicals to surfaces; and MedHab, which has patented technology in the medical device field.
